Since June 28, 2025, accessible online shops are legally required across the EU. Alt text for product images is one of the core requirements – and also the easiest lever for better visibility in Google Image Search.
The problem: with 500, 5,000 or 50,000 product images, writing alt text manually isn’t an option. That’s why there are now numerous tools that generate alt text automatically. But the differences are enormous – in method, quality and price.
We tested and compared seven of the most relevant tools. The key question: Which tool writes real, indexable alt text into the HTML source code – and which only delivers an overlay?

2. Three Categories of Alt Text Tools
Not every tool works the same way. The method determines whether your alt text has SEO value or is merely cosmetic:
Category 1: AI Image Recognition (Best Quality)
How it works: The tool analyzes image content using computer vision (GPT-4o, Gemini etc.) and generates a natural language description. The alt text is written directly into the HTML alt attribute.
SEO value: Full. Google indexes the alt text.
Tools: AutoAlt.ai, AltText.ai, ShortPixel AI SEO
Category 2: Overlay Widget (No SEO Value)
How it works: A JavaScript widget loads alt text as an overlay on the website. The HTML source code’s alt attribute remains empty or unchanged.
SEO value: None. Google cannot reliably index JavaScript-generated alt text.
Tools: accessiBe, UserWay
Category 3: Rule-Based (Limited Quality)
How it works: Alt text is assembled from the filename, page title or Yoast focus keyword. No AI image recognition.
SEO value: Limited. The texts don’t describe image content – they repeat page titles.
Tools: Image Attributes Pro, BIALTY
3. AutoAlt.ai – Top Pick 2026
At a Glance
- Method: AI image recognition (GPT-4o + Gemini)
- Price: Free tier (50 credits/mo), Starter €4.49/mo, Professional €16.99/mo, Business €52/mo
- Plugins: WordPress, WooCommerce, Shopware 6, Shopify, Joomla, Drupal
- Languages: 130+ (translation in all shop languages simultaneously)
- HQ: Aalen, Germany (webAufstieg GmbH)
- Servers: EU (GDPR-compliant)
AutoAlt.ai is the only alt text generator with self-developed, dedicated plugins for WordPress, Shopware 6 and Shopify – all from one provider, all using the same credit system. One credit = one image, regardless of format or number of languages. All translations are included in the credit price – a key advantage over AltText.ai, where each additional language costs an extra credit.
In the Shopware Store, AutoAlt.ai offers the most comprehensive alt text plugin with folder-based bulk processing, keyword control via custom GPT prompts and 5-star reviews. AltText.ai has a Shopware integration via the third-party developer NEXTI, but with no reviews and limited functionality.
Strengths: Only real Shopware plugin on the market. Product-aware context (product names are intelligently integrated into alt text). Keyword control via custom GPT prompts. All translations included in credit price. EU servers, no traffic limit, EAA-compliant from installation.
Weaknesses: Newer provider (since 2025), fewer WordPress installations than AltText.ai. No browser extension or API access in the free tier.
4. AltText.ai
At a Glance
- Method: AI image recognition
- Price: 25 free credits (no CC), Bronze from $5/mo (100 credits), Credit packs from $3/50 credits
- Plugins: WordPress, Shopify, Contentful, Hygraph + Shopware (via third-party NEXTI)
- WP installs: 20,000+ active
- Rating: 4.7/5 on WordPress.org
- HQ: USA
AltText.ai is the best-known AI alt text generator with over 20,000 active WordPress installations and the largest user base. The plugin integrates with Yoast SEO, Rank Math and all major SEO plugins to incorporate focus keywords into alt text.
Particularly strong is the WooCommerce integration: the “Ecommerce Vision” feature recognizes product names automatically. Since early 2026, WP-CLI support and improved multisite capabilities are available.
Strengths: Largest community, many integrations (Zapier, Pabbly, Albato), browser extension, CSV import/export, WP-CLI. Good documentation.
Weaknesses: Shopware plugin only available via third-party developer NEXTI (no own plugin, no reviews in Store). US servers (GDPR concerns for EU customers). Translations cost 1 additional credit per language. Pricing model less transparent than AutoAlt.ai.
5. accessiBe
At a Glance
- Method: Overlay widget (JavaScript)
- Price: From $490/year (Micro), Growth $1,490/yr, Scale $3,990/yr
- Shopware: Not available
- FTC fine: $1 million (January 2025, finalized April 2025)
accessiBe is an accessibility overlay widget, not an alt text generator in the true sense. The widget loads a JavaScript layer over the website that generates alt text among other things – but only in the overlay, not in the HTML source code.
This means: Google doesn’t see the alt text. No SEO value. Additionally, the FTC fined accessiBe $1 million in January 2025 (finalized April 2025) for making misleading claims about the effectiveness of its overlay widget.
Over 1,000 accessibility experts have signed the “Overlay Fact Sheet” advising against the use of overlay widgets. The German Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired (DBSV) also warns against overlay solutions.
Strengths: Broad accessibility features beyond alt text. Easy installation (one script tag).
Weaknesses: No SEO value. $1M FTC fine (2025). No Shopware plugin. Expensive ($490+/year). Overlay approach controversial in the accessibility community. Alt text not in source code.
6. UserWay
At a Glance
- Method: Overlay widget (JavaScript)
- Price: Free (no AI), Small $490/yr, Medium $1,490/yr
- WP installs: 400,000+ (widget)
- Acquisition: January 2024 by Level Access for $98.7M
- Lawsuit: BloomsyBox class action (July 2024, Delaware)
UserWay follows the same overlay principle as accessiBe. The free widget has over 400,000 WordPress installations but doesn’t generate AI alt text – AI features are only available in paid plans starting at $490/year.
Since the acquisition by Level Access in January 2024, UserWay has positioned itself more strongly in the enterprise segment. The BloomsyBox class action lawsuit from July 2024 continues (as of March 2026: some claims dismissed, others proceeding).
Strengths: Large user base (400,000+ WP installs). Enterprise support via Level Access. G2 rating 4.7/5.
Weaknesses: Same overlay issues as accessiBe. AI alt text only in paid plans. No Shopware plugin. Alt text not in source code. Ongoing class action lawsuit.
7. Image Attributes Pro
At a Glance
- Method: Filename, page title, Yoast focus keyword
- Price: Free + Pro from $99.99 (Unlimited license)
- WordPress only: No Shopware, no Shopify
- Since: 2017
Image Attributes Pro is not an AI tool. It generates alt text from the filename, page title or Yoast/Rank Math focus keyword. This means: if your image is called “IMG_4532.jpg”, the alt text becomes “IMG 4532” – not particularly helpful.
For websites with well-named image files and consistent focus keywords, the plugin can create a quick baseline. But it doesn’t describe what’s in the image. A product photo of a red leather boot gets the product title as alt text – not a description of the boot.
Strengths: One-time payment (no subscription). On the market since 2017. Good for bulk-updating existing images.
Weaknesses: No AI image recognition. Alt text doesn’t describe image content. WordPress only. No multilingual support. Not EAA/WCAG compliant (descriptive alt text requires image descriptions).
8. BIALTY (Bulk Auto Image Alt Text)
At a Glance
- Method: Rule engine (Yoast/Rank Math keywords, page titles)
- Price: Free + Pro (subscription)
- WP installs: 10,000+
- Note: Does NOT write to Media Library – frontend injection only
BIALTY works completely differently from AI-based tools: it doesn’t analyze images at all. Instead, it injects alt text at render time into the frontend HTML based on the Yoast/Rank Math focus keyword or page title.
Important to understand: BIALTY does not write alt text into the WordPress Media Library. If you deactivate the plugin, all alt text disappears immediately. And since no image recognition takes place, all images on a page receive the same alt text – the page’s focus keyword.
Strengths: Free. No API keys needed. Instantly active on all pages. Lightweight.
Weaknesses: No AI. All images on a page get the same text. Alt text disappears on deactivation. WordPress only. Not WCAG compliant (identical alt text for different images violates best practices).
9. ShortPixel AI SEO
At a Glance
- Method: AI image recognition + image compression
- Price: From $8.33/mo (combo with image optimization, 100 AI credits/mo)
- WordPress only: No Shopware, no Shopify
- Known for: Image compression (ShortPixel Image Optimizer)
ShortPixel is primarily known as an image compression plugin. The AI SEO feature generates alt text alongside titles, captions and descriptions. It also includes automatic file renaming and Open Graph data.
AI quality is solid, but the focus is clearly on combining image optimization with SEO metadata – not on alt text alone. For WordPress users already using ShortPixel for image compression, it’s a practical addition.
Strengths: Combo of image optimization + alt text. File renaming included. Also generates titles, captions, descriptions.
Weaknesses: WordPress only. No Shopware, no Shopify. Alt text quality not as focused as specialized tools. Pricing tied to image compression.
10. Verdict & Recommendation
Our Recommendation for 2026
For WordPress + WooCommerce: AutoAlt.ai or AltText.ai – both deliver real AI alt text in HTML. AutoAlt.ai stands out with EU servers, GDPR compliance and the best value (50 free credits/month, all translations included).
For Shopware 6: AutoAlt.ai offers the most comprehensive plugin with folder-based bulk processing, keyword control and 5-star reviews. AltText.ai has a third-party integration via NEXTI.
For Shopify: AutoAlt.ai or AltText.ai – both have native apps.
Avoid overlays: accessiBe and UserWay deliver no SEO value. The alt text isn’t in the source code, Google can’t index it, and the accessibility community warns against the overlay approach.
The Right Choice Depends on Your CMS
If you’re looking for a WordPress plugin, you have the most options. But if you run Shopware, Shopify or multiple CMS simultaneously, the field narrows quickly. AutoAlt.ai is currently the only tool that supports all three major e-commerce CMS with native plugins – all under one credit account.
11. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best alt text plugin for WordPress in 2026?
AutoAlt.ai offers the best value: real AI image recognition, 50 free credits/month, plugins for WordPress, Shopware and Shopify, 130+ languages and EU servers. AltText.ai is a strong alternative with 20,000+ active WordPress installations and the largest community.
How much does an alt text generator cost?
Prices vary widely: AutoAlt.ai from €0/month (50 free credits), AltText.ai from $0 (free trial), accessiBe from $490/year, UserWay from $490/year. Overlay solutions are significantly more expensive but deliver no SEO value. For most shops, AutoAlt.ai’s Starter plan (€4.49/mo for 100 images) is sufficient.
Is there an alt text plugin for Shopware?
AutoAlt.ai offers the most comprehensive AI alt text plugin for Shopware 6 in the Shopware Store – with its own bulk tool, folder processing, keyword control and 5-star reviews. AltText.ai has a Shopware integration via the third-party developer NEXTI, but with no reviews and limited functionality.
What is the difference between overlay and real alt text?
Overlay widgets (accessiBe, UserWay) load alt text via JavaScript overlay – it doesn’t appear in the HTML source code and has no SEO value. Real alt text generators (AutoAlt.ai, AltText.ai) write directly into the HTML alt attribute. Only real alt text is indexed by Google and improves your image search ranking.
Are alt texts required under the EAA?
Yes. Since June 28, 2025, the European Accessibility Act requires accessible online shops across the EU. Alt text for images is one of the core requirements under WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Fines in Germany reach up to €100,000. France, Spain, the Netherlands and other EU countries have comparable regulations.
